Washington State Legislators Urge UW to Negotiate a Fair Contract

Seven Washington State legislators, including Rep. Gerry Pollet and Rep. Larry Seaquist, vice-chair and chair of the House Higher Education Committee,  wrote to UW President Young to encourage UW to negotiate a fair contract that provides a living wage and job stability for UW English Language Faculty. Legislators reminded President Young that teachers need to “have the stability to invest in their own education and professional development.” However, UW’s current proposal, which would lead to two thirds of teachers to still being on quarterly contracts and 70% still receiving minimum pay, would be far from providing such an environment. Noting that negotiations have still not concluded after 20 months, legislators strongly encouraged UW to accept mediation.
